Believe it or not, the NBA Draft Lottery is only eight days away.
As the NBA playoff enters the second round, the rest of the league will turn their attention to the 2024 prospect pool. While this draft class has largely been viewed as one of the weaker ones in recent memory, front offices will use the next handful of weeks to convince themselves otherwise. And that process largely starts at the NBA Draft combine, which is held right in the Chicago Bulls’ backyard.
The NBA announced they have extended a Draft Combine invite to 78 players. The event will run from May 12-19 at Wintrust Arena. Of course, we’ll see how many of these names stick around for the entire process and actually compete in scrimmages. The new CBA does state that all invited players must go through measurements, testing, and shooting drills, but they can choose to sit out the 5-on-5 scrimmaging. I’d say an undefined draft board could bode well for complete participation, however. With the top of the draft so up for grabs, the combine could be a great way for certain players to significantly boost their stock.
The Chicago Bulls have every reason to work their tail off during this period. If the lottery balls fall where they should, Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley will have the No. 11 pick on June 26th. This will be only the second lottery pick for the AKME regime. Here is a complete list of the combine invites:
The Athletic’s Shams Charania also shared that there is a new top 10 player rankings that help identify which teams can access certain combine information. According to this, the Chicago Bulls will not be able to see data for potential No. 1 pick Alexandre Sarr. But they will be in the clear for the remainder of the top 10 players, which includes Matas Buzelis, Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, Zaccharie Risacher, Nikola Topic, Rob Dillingham, Ron Holland, Dalton Knecht, and Reed Sheppard.
While the Chicago Bulls should never draft for need, they do have two positions worthy of extra evaluation. The rotation is in desperate need of a more traditional size. Not only should they start thinking about the future of the center position, but they need more length at the wing. Patrick Williams is really their only physical presence along the perimeter, and we all know that the beginning of his career has been pretty up and down.
ESPN’s Tim Bontemps believes that we should have quite the NBA offseason ahead of us …
“Executives around the NBA have told ESPN that they expect this to be an active summer across the league, as high-spending teams grapple with restrictions under the new collective bargaining agreement,” Bontemps wrote in one of his latest articles.
I like the sound of that! The more active things are over the next few months, the easier it’ll be for the Chicago Bulls to find avenues to change up this roster (at least … in theory). This is especially true as we think about the Zach LaVine market. The recent report about how a LaVine trade could develop sooner than later now makes even more sense …
The Sky’s first preseason game was far from perfect, but Angel Reese still made an impression. The team’s first-round draft pick finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds in 24 minutes of action. She may have only shot 3-10 from the field, but she was a perfect 9-10 from the free throw line! As far as first appearances go, it could have been a lot worse.
