The Chicago Bulls need to stop living in the past. The organization’s lackadaisical approach to building a title contender surely stems from its success in the 90s. Michael Jordan and Co. turned the Bulls brand into one of the most recognizable in the sports world, and the franchise is still reaping the benefits of it to this day. Seats are filled. Merchandise is sold. Fans are obsessive.
But fans are also exhausted. Touting what once was with (embarrassing) Ring of Honor ceremonies and suites filled with former team legends will only work for so long. The truth of the matter is that the magic is starting to wear off. Just take a look at the recent player poll that drastically shrunk Jordan’s lead in the GOAT debate.
Eventually, the only way for the Bulls to keep honoring the past is by living up to expectations in the present. The longer they go stumbling out of Play-In Tournaments and heralding mediocrity, the more damage is done to the image this organization believes it possesses.
With all that said, let’s live in the past! Michael Jordan hit his iconic jumper against the Cleveland Cavaliers 35 years ago today. As much as I love watching this clip every time it resurfaces, seeing it this morning is precisely what motivated me to rant in that intro. That moment was over three decades ago, folks.
Jalen Brunson put together his fourth-straight 40-point game to beat the Indiana Pacers on Monday. He’s the first to do it since the GOAT, which led to a great interaction between him and teammate Donte DiVincenzo.
In the other playoff game last night, Anthony Edwards put together another masterful showing to hand the defending champions a 0-2 series deficit. How good has he been in these playoffs? So good that the Denver arena started to feed him MVP chants. Hearing this on the road in a playoff game is NUTS.
For what it’s worth, though, I guess away fans have a tendency to fill Ball Arena. Remember when the Bulls won there a couple of seasons back? It basically sounded like the United Center.
Angel Reese celebrated her 22nd birthday at the Met Gala. The Chicago Sky’s first-round pick had an excused absence from practice to attend the event. Still, I think the expectation is that she’ll be right back in action tonight for Chicago’s second preseason game against the New York Liberty.
Speaking of the Sky, the team got some really bad news this week. We’ll have to wait quite a while to see No. 3 overall pick Kamilla Cardoso on the floor …
Dennis Rodman’s fourth player on Mount Rushmore might shock you …
