Langdon & LaVine, Chicago’s Draft Prospect, Epic Sky Win, and Other Bulls Bullets

Zach LaVine of the Chicago Bulls during his 17-game absence

The Pistons are just the latest team to make a change at the top, and they shook things up with their new President of Basketball Operations hire Trajan Langdon. How could that affect their interest in Zach LaVine?

Bulls Bullets

  • Now, there has been no direct link to the Pistons and LaVine since Langdon’s hire yesterday, this is really just me thinking out loud on a light Bulls news day. The new Pistons boss will reportedly have total control to do whatever he wants. Detroit was in on Zach LaVine talks at the deadline, could a new face running the place drive up that interest in the offseason? The Pistons were AWFUL last season with just 14 wins, and they still struck out in the lottery getting the 5th overall pick. Will Langdon have the patience to go through growing pains with a young core, or could he be tempted to make a move for a player like LaVine who could potentially pick them up some more wins?
  • Now, of course, LaVine wouldn’t be guaranteed to make Detroit that much better and his fit alongside the guard-heavy young core of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey is questionable. However, new Presidents/GMs at times like to put their mark on their new organization early, and LaVine will be a big enough name without a big price tag (well, at least in terms of the price to acquire him) that could intrigue a new decision maker.

  • Detroit is also projected to have the most salary cap space in the league this offseason at $60 million, but they’re also not likely to attract any potential big-name free agents like Paul George, James Harden, OG Anunoby, etc. I’m sure they don’t want to blow through all $60 million of that, but they would have the money to take on LaVine and could potentially get the Bulls to give up future assets to absorb more of the salary into their cap space. Again, there’s been no report of the two sides being linked again, but with where the Pistons are at in their rebuild and their unlikeliness to land a top free agent, LaVine could very well make sense as an option to improve their roster and also collect an asset or two for the future.
  • The Draft Combine was just in town, and with the season over and the lottery picks being so unpredictable this year there has been a lot of Draft talk swirling. If you haven’t read it yet (it’s only been out for a couple of hours), Eli had the chance to interview Matas Buzelis who will almost certainly be not only a lottery pick, but his draft stock is rising enough where many have him going in the top 6-7 selections.
  • Buzelis played for the NBA’s G-League development team the Ignite this past season where he averaged 14.1 PPG and 6.6 RPG. I won’t give too much of the interview away as you should give it a read, but he credited much of his growth and development as a basketball player to his Chicagoland roots, and any time an athlete talks about his love for our home I’m hooked.
  • The Chicago Sky picked up a HUGE win last night thanks to a full team effort and a big late-game And-1 from first-round draft pick Angel Reese. Reese finished the game with a near double-double (13 points, 9 rebounds). With around two and a half minutes remaining, Reese took a pass on the low block, went up with it as she got tripped, made the shot, and got the foul. The win for the Sky handed the New York Liberty their first loss of the season, and it was the second win in a row for Chicago. It’s most certainly the type of road win a young team can build off and use for some momentum.
  • Speaking of Zach LaVine, it sounds like the Sixers might view him as a backup plan if they strike out in free agency this summer…
  • But LaVine who LaVine was spotted with at Bronny James’ pro day might also spark a few rumors back up…
  • Ben Brown was quite the bright spot for the Cubs in another frustrating offensive performance that resulted in a 3-0 loss to Atlanta.
  • The White Sox probably would have lost anyway, but wow they got a raw deal on the call that ended last night’s comeback bid against the Orioles.
  • The Hawks season might be over, but you can still watch Connor Bedard play hockey! Bedsy is having himself a great performance at the World Championships
  • After a really good day for Caleb Williams and the offense at Bears OTAs, the defense struck back on Thursday.
