God’s Wrathwatch: Ryan Dempster Gettin’ X-Rays
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher/excessive celebrator Ryan Dempster is recovering adequately from a broken bone in his right big toe. If x-rays show that his bone is healing nicely, he could be back as soon as next week – starting July 30 against the Houston Astros.
“Larry [Rothschild, pitching coach] seems to think that if Dempster’s X-ray is good on Thursday, he can throw a simulated game over the weekend of 50, 60 pitches,” Piniella said, “and he could be in the rotation any time from Thursday on. That’s how he feels. If the X-rays show the bone hasn’t fused, then we have to wait a little longer. We’ll know Thursday.” Muskat Ramblings.
So far the Cubs are no worse for the wear in Dempster’s absence as youngster Kevin Hart has filled in successfully (albeit incredibly luckily). Hart will go again for Dempster later this week against the Reds.
