The National League Central leading St. Louis Cardinals are becoming quite active in the pre-trade-deadline market.
Yesterday, they dealt outfielder Chris Duncan to the Boston Red Sox for recently DFA’d infielder Julio Lugo, who could provide extra support if Khalil Greene never turns things around. And now, the Cardinals are looking to add an outfielder – one they’ve been close to acquiring many times before.
For the second time, rumors are swirling about the Cardinals’ interest in the A’s Matt Holliday, below. One NL source said Wednesday that St. Louis might be edging closer to Oakland’s asking price, minor-league third baseman Brett Wallace, because the Cardinals need a left fielder and their other option essentially would be Washington’s Josh Willingham. Morning Huddle.
Holliday is having something of a down year by his standards – his OPS is down some 100 points from his career average – but would assuredly be an excellent addition for this Cardinals club.
