The youngster call-ups continue, and this one may be of a little more moment than the others. The Chicago Cubs will today call up outfielder Tyler Colvin from AA Tennessee.
“We’ll get another outfielder and we’ll get a look at our future,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. “We’ll put him in the outfield and let him play.”
Colvin batted .300 with 14 homers, 12 doubles, seven triples and 50 RBIs in 84 games this season for Double-A Tennessee, which reached the Southern League championship. The Smokies’ season ended Saturday night with a 7-3 loss to Jacksonville as the Suns took the best-of-five series, 3-1. Colvin batted .172 in eight postseason games with two doubles, one homer and four RBIs. cubs.com.
Although ostensibly it may appear that it was the Milton Bradley suspension that precipitated the Colvin call-up, but it’s just as likely that the Cubs were waiting on Tennessee’s playoff run to conclude.
Colvin is often remembered by Cubs fans as the guy the Cubs took in the first round in 2006, when he was expected to go in the third or fourth round. The pick is usually explained by a combination of the fact that the Cubs did not have a second and third round pick that year and the fact that most of the draft money was used to sign Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija to a major league contract.
