Cubs Are “Close” to Signing Second Round Pick Reggie Golden

Chicago Cubs

While the Chicago Cubs have signed most of their top draft picks from last month’s first year player draft, a decent chunk remain unsigned. Most, however, are latter third picks, which are typically fall-back types or guys that are not expected to be easy to sign.

Reggie Golden, on the other hand, remains unsigned despite being the Chicago Cubs’ second round pick. The high school outfielder out of Alabama holds an offer to play ball at the University of Alabama, so he’s got a pretty solid option for next year if the Cubs don’t make him a good offer. Thus, it’s not a shock that Golden remains unsigned to this point.

But according to Bruce Miles, that’s expected to change soon, as the Cubs are close to signing Golden. There’s still not a huge rush, as the Cubs have until mid-August to hammer out a deal before their draft rights lapse.

If that should happen, the Cubs will get a compensatory second round pick next year to make up for the failure to sign Golden.
