More Spring Training Bullets

Chicago Cubs

I know, I know – you’re being inundated with bullet posts. If you hate them, let me know. But for now, they seem to be the most efficient and thoughtful way of keeping you updated on the points of interest coming out of Mesa.

  • Carlos Silva is sticking to his there-is-only-one-rotation-spot-open-because-I’m-the-fourth-starter theory. “For them, it’s open and for whoever is competing, it’s open,” Silva said Tuesday. “For me, there’s maybe one spot open because I’m one of the starters. Competition is always good. If they have me compete again, that’s all I can do is compete. I don’t have to prove or show them – I showed them what I can do.” You’ll note that the only person buying the theory, at present, is Carlos Silva – and that includes the decision-makers on the Cubs.
  • Speaking of the rotation, Braden Looper says he’s healthy, and hopes to land a spot on the Cubs. Looper didn’t pitch at all in 2010, and is in camp on a non-roster invitation. If he doesn’t make the team, he’s expected to be released.
  • James Russell will be the only lefty competing for a rotation spot, which should give him a leg up, even if his prior performance does not.
  • Newly-acquired reliever Robert Coello will compete for a spot in the increasingly crowded bullpen, but he does have a minor league option left.
  • Top positional prospect Brett Jackson has already made an impact in Spring camp. Namely, on a nearby windshield.
