Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs 3, Rockies 6 – March 5, 2013
The Cubs lost today to the Rockies, sinking them below .500 in Cactus League play. Shrug.
- Scott Feldman’s day did not go well, as he didn’t have a particular good feel for his pitches. He went just two innings, giving up six hits and a walk, yielding four earned runs.
- Travis Wood, also now in the rotation to start the year, followed with three quality innings, though. He struck out two, gave up three hits, one earned run, and no walks. If he could do that kind of thing over six/seven innings with regularity, the Cubs will have to figure out a way to keep him in the rotation even after Scott Baker and Matt Garza are ready to return.
- Non-roster invitee Cory Wade got into a game for the first time in a while, giving up a couple hits and an earned run in his inning of work. I wonder if he was dealing with a minor injury or something, because, on paper, he looks like a guy we’d be seeing quite a bit of in these games (because he looks like the kind of guy who has a legit shot of cracking the pen).
- Edwin Maysonet, who was playing shortstop and is fighting for the final bench spot, hit an inside-the-park homer. Brad Nelson hit an outside-the-park homer.
- Otherwise, it was a tepid day offensively for the Cubs – no one had more than one hit, and they took only one walk (Brett Jackson).
- At least Anthony Rizzo hit a bomb of a homer in an exhibition game for Team Italy. That counts as much as any of these other Spring numbers.
