In Case You Missed Anything from the Busy Weekend

jeff samardzija gatorade showerI know that some folks check out from the Chicago Cubs and Bleacher Nation on Friday afternoon – seeing friends, spending time with family, and other ridiculousness – so here’s a quick catch-up for those who missed what proved to be a fairly busy weekend:

Friday

  • There was a fresh Lukewarm Stove in the afternoon on Friday, which you may have already caught.
  • In the late afternoon, the Angels and Cardinals got together on a Peter Bourjos/David Freese trade.
  • Soon after the trade went down, the Cubs announced their coaching staff (sans first base coach).
  • Saturday

  • The Cubs signed outfielder Casper Wells to a minor league deal. He’s no star, but it’s a solid minor league acquisition.
  • The Yankees agreed to terms with Brian McCann on a five-year, $85 million contract.
  • A rumor broke late Saturday night that the Blue Jays were stepping up their pursuit of Jeff Samardzija, and putting together a package of young players.
  • Sunday

  • There were the usual Bullets, with comments from Jed Hoyer on Starlin Castro’s plate approach.
  • The Cardinals signed Jhonny Peralta – and the residue of his PED suspension – to a four-year, $53 million deal. It was a successful weekend for the Cards. Neat.
  • Japanese officials are headed to the States to try and solve the posting system impasse that’s keeping Masahiro Tanaka unavailable for now.
