The offseason is but a couple weeks away, and although we know that the Chicago Cubs will be involved in free agency, even at the highest levels, we can’t possibly know for sure what the Cubs will do. Heck, the Cubs can’t yet know for certain what they’ll be able to accomplish.
At most, for now, they can merely have plans. I reckon they’ve got some very interesting ones, given their stated goal of winning the NL Central next year, their comments about no longer simply being in talent acquisition mode, and their payroll flexibility.
Speaking of payroll flexibility, Jeff and Mike asked me to talk a little bit about the Cubs’ payroll situation. What are the current commitments? What’s a realistic payroll for next year? What’s a possible maximum payroll? And so forth.
