Wow: Watch a 1938 Home Movie of a Game at Wrigley Field

Chicago Cubs

One of the many wonderful things about the Chicago Cubs playing in Wrigley Field for nearly 100 years* is that the collection of events, moments, and memories from the very same place about the very same team is enormous. Technological advances have allowed us to preserve and see many of those moments, but obviously that takes you back only so far.

How would you like to be able to watch some video at Wrigley Field from more than 75 years ago?

Thanks to the Chicago Film Archives, you can now watch a little bit of home video footage from a game at Wrigley Field in 1938:

(h/t to The Wrigley Blog and to CBS on the game likely being 1938, despite the title.)

That is truly amazing.

Wrigley is still completely, immediately recognizable as Wrigley. The fans are decked out in their finest, and smoking cigars. The Old Scoreboard looked a little different in those days, but it’s mostly the same and in the same spot. The players’ uniforms are incredible.

I could go on. This is just so much fun to watch today.

*(Note that, although Wrigley Field celebrated its 100th birthday last year, the Cubs didn’t start playing there until 1916 – so get ready for another celebration next year.)
