Cubs Minor League Daily: Post-Draft Season, With Plenty on Tap

cubs azl spring training logoThe 2015 draft is over. So now what?

Now things get really busy.

Starting right away the Cubs will begin signing their draft picks. Some teams announce signings as they are made, but the Cubs tend to let a pile build up and announce them in a lump. If you do not hear anything from the Cubs regarding signings for a while, don’t worry. That is completely normal for this team.

In about a week we may get to see some of these draftees, as well as quite a few 2014 draftees, begin playing for the Short Season A Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League. The Emeralds begin their season on the road on June 18 followed by a home opener on June 23. The Arizona Rookie League will be getting started about that same time.

And then we have the International Free Agent signing period beginning July 2. The Cubs are expected to be very active this summer and should add a ton of talent to the farm system. We are confident that the Cubs are the front runners to sign as many as one quarter of the twenty or so best prospects available, but they may also be in serious contention to land two of the three very best on top of that group. Information is very sketchy on the IFA front, so stay tuned.

Finally, we have some playoff races in the full season leagues. Thanks to the split season format that declares a first half and a second half winner, we are lucky enough to watch two playoff chases featuring Cubs’ affiliates this month. Tennessee is fighting with Chattanooga for first place in the Southern League, and Myrtle Beach is looking to turn their solid lead into a first half title in the Carolina League. Those races end in mid-June.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa had the day off.
Tennessee – Tennessee suffered another postponement.
Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans piled on the runs in the ninth, then let the game slide into extras. In the eleventh they added three more runs and this time held on for the 9-6 win.
South Bend – The Cubs also gave up a late lead, but for them it turned into a 6-4 loss.

Performances of Note

  • [Myrtle Beach] Trey Martin, Kevin Brown, Jacob Rogers, and Mark Zagunis all had 3 hits for the Pelicans. Martin also added his 8th steal.
  • [Myrtle Beach] The only extra base hit for the Cubs came, once again, from catcher Victor Caratini. That double was his only hit.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Duane Underwood was effective in this start. He allowed a run on 3 hits and a walk over 6 innings while striking out 3.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Juan Paniagua struck out 3 and walked 2 over 2 innings of hitless relief.
  • [South Bend] Yasiel Balaguert doubled twice and finished 3 for 4. His line now reads .291/.325/.466.
  • [South Bend] Gleyber Torres picked up 2 more singles for the Cubs’ only other multi-hit day. He also stole his 9th base of the year.
  • Other News

  • All-Star Game fan votes are not just a major league thing. You can also vote online for the Triple A All-Stars, including some of the Iowa Cubs. Arismendy Alcantara, Javier Baez, and Christian Villanueva would all certainly be strong contenders for a vote or fifty on the infield, while on the outfield your best options are probably John Andreoli and Matt Szczur. You will also get to vote for the pitchers, and that makes Donn Roach and Blake Cooper both good candidates. You can do write in votes if the player you really want to honor isn’t on the ballot. Whoever you vote for, do it soon. The balloting ends June 26.
