It was a quiet day in the minors yesterday. Just three Cubs’ affiliates were in action, with Tennessee being the sole full season league team to take the field.
But since Tennessee did take the field, Albert Almora had a multi-hit game. He now has at least two hits in every game going back to August 5, a streak of six games in a row. In that span has 14 total hits, including 5 doubles, 5 walks, and just one strikeout.
At hot streak is just a hot streak, but this sort of hot streak is what can happen when a guy who excels at making contact starts to consistently wait on pitches he can drive. Good things happen when a hitter squares up the ball, and for Almora the key is going to be finding those pitches he can square up and not settling for pitches that turn into weak grounders.
We’ve seen, quite a lot actually, what a non-productive Almora looks like. Now, arguably for the first time since he was drafted, we’re getting a look at the upside that led to the Cubs locking in on him early in the draft process and making him the first pick under the new front office. Since we have seen both extremes, now we wait and see on which side of that scale Almora settles for his career.
