It’s amazing how a terrible final inning can actually enhance the incredible feeling associated with a Cubs win.
Coming into the 9th, it looked like the Cubs were about to close down a great, but relatively hum-drum, 5-1 win over the Cardinals. But then the requirement that Hector Rondon be tossed – because Fernando Rodney got a little wild, and because yesterday’s game went as it did – made things incredibly dicey and interesting in the 9th.
Thankfully, the Cubs had built themselves enough of a lead, thanks in part to the great bullpen work earlier in the game and timely offense (yeah back-to-back homers!), that they were able to hold on to beat the Cardinals once again. The final out, on a perfectly-timed dive and toss by Addison Russell … I pretty much lost my mind.
