What with the big league team still playing – NLCS! – attention on the Arizona Fall League is lighter this year than in the recent past, when it was an important bridge between the regular season and the hot stove season.
That doesn’t make the prospect-heavy experience in Arizona any less important, of course, and the Cubs have a huge contingent of interesting names playing in the league for the Mesa Solar Sox.
Through three games, each of Jeimer Candelario, Willson Contreras, Mark Zagunis has gotten into the offensive mix, though only Candelario (3 hits including a double, a walk, and no strikeouts in six plate appearances) has had substantial success. The sample, of course, is miniscule. And, hey, Zagunis has a .429 OBP despite a .000 batting average!
Pierce Johnson started the opener for the Solar Sox, going three innings and allowing three earned on a couple walks and a homer. Rob Zastryzny pitched a couple innings, striking out three, allowing a walk and a solo homer. Each of David Garner and Corey Black has thrown a scoreless frame with a couple strikeouts.
John Arguello has a new site going about baseball in Arizona, which currently features some excellent in-person takes on these Cubs prospects in the AFL, among many other top prospects in the game.
