First thing’s first: this saga has had enough twists and turns that you’re still going to want to withhold jubilation (or anything approximating it) until you actually see the man in a Cubs jersey.
That said …

Hooray, right? Mostly hooray. I’m still holding my breath a bit, but if the Cubs do finally get Martinez for the $3 million as reported earlier, it will be quite a fantastic addition to the organization.
As you’ll recall, Martinez’s stateside reps reportedly originally agreed to a deal with the Giants at $2.5 million, but all the t’s may not have been crossed before the Cubs came to a $3 million deal with Martinez’s reps in the Dominican Republic. At last check, the issue was in MLB’s hands to determine which agreement is going to be enforced.
If Sanchez’s new report is correct, the Cubs carried the day. This would make me feel a good bit better on a day when I’m still trying to bury my feelings about the first two games of the NLCS.
UPDATE: Baseball America is also reporting that the signing – with the Cubs – is official. I’ll still wait for the Cubs to confirm and announce before feeling 100% confident, but, at last, it looks like this is actually, really happening.
