The Chicago Cubs play a Spring Training game in FOUR DAYS.
I’m instinctively Garth-and-Wayne head-bangin’ as I say that. I can’t wait.
The Cubs’ Cactus League slate opens on Thursday, March 3 against the Brewers in Maryvale (which got me mapping around on Google, and I found the town of Nothing, Arizona). The Brewers, of course, project to be abysmal this year. The Cubs project to be world-beaters. So you can pretty much book that the Brewers will beat the Cubs in that game, and the intemperate among us will absolutely freak out, and the rest of will laugh.
In that game, the Cubs’ starter will be Travis Wood, with Kyle Hendricks following (Cubs.com). Don’t read anything into that, because, as you may recall, the Cubs are planning to stretch out all of their super utility pitchers – Wood, Adam Warren, Trevor Cahill, and Clayton Richard – this spring for a variety of reasons that won’t necessarily lead to them actually joining the rotation in April. Each pitcher will likely go about two innings in the game, or a certain low number of pitches.
And even though it’s a totally fake game, just for practice and getting guys warm for the regular season … I’m still going to be so very excited.
