As you can imagine, Brett and I (especially Brett) wind up reading a ton of articles, stories and reports about the Chicago Cubs. [Brett: And thanks for the picture choice there, Michael.]
Some of those stories make sense for an entire post, others get spun into a completely new idea and some others just get a mention here or there (in, say, the Bullets).
But a very select few catch our attention enough to make us pause, take a beat and really consider how and why we can share a certain piece in the best possible way. Sometimes we even call these articles your “must-read” of the day, in order to express just how fondly we feel about words and the order an author chose to arrange them.
Brayan Pena’s incredible story of his defection and return to Cuba at the Players Tribune was once such story and, today, I’m here to share another. The article is entitled “This is the Year” by Joe Posnanski, and is an extremely enjoyable read. In fact, it’s your must-read of the day.
[adinserter block=”1″]At NBC Sports, Posnanski writes a long form piece about the Cubs waiting (and losing) over the years, from the perspective of the five stages of grief. It is comical, enlightening, encouraging and full of fun, interesting facts (like Theo Epstein’s grandfather and great uncle cowrote Casablanca or the Cubs have lost 700 more games than they’ve won since WWII – funny facts right?! HA HA HA.)
Within the article, you’ll find new information you might not have knows before – like Epstein’s actual living document called “The Cubs Way” which outlined, in detail, the type of team the Chicago Cubs were going to be, and some old information you wished you forgot – like the 1977 play Bleacher Bums about Cubs fans lamenting over the team’s failures that is somehow still as relevant nearly 40 years later.
I don’t want to spoil too much of the article, because the journey is great, so take my word for it and check it out for yourself. After all, if you read just one thing today, this should be it.
