Is today Opening Day? I want to be really excited if it is, but I can’t be entirely sure.
When teams all opened their seasons on the same day (give or take a late starter or two), it was quite clear when we’d arrived on Opening Day. Even when ESPN started doing the Sunday Opening Night Game, it was still clear that the next day was “Opening Day,” because that’s when all the teams opened up play.
Today, though, there are three games: the Cardinals and Pirates play at 12pm CT, the Blue Jays and Rays play a few hours later, and the World Series rematch kicks off at 7:30pm CT. So is today Opening Day? Obviously it is for those teams, but am I allowed to feel like HOORAY TODAY IS OPENING DAY(!)?
[adinserter block=”1″]Complicating matters is the fact that the Chicago Cubs play an exhibition game today against the Anaheim Angels, the very team against whom they actually open the season tomorrow night. How can it feel like Opening Day if the Cubs are playing a fake game today?
Every other team, by the way, is off today, in anticipation of their openers tomorrow. What a strange setup.
In any case, real baseball starts at 12pm CT today. The Cubs play one last fake baseball at 2pm CT.
Hooray for … a baseball day!
