Fun With Dexter Fowler’s Homer and Hot Start

Chicago Cubs
Like I said in the EBS last night (er, earlier this morning), it makes me very happy that Dexter Fowler returned to the Chicago Cubs this offseason.

To be sure, I had hoped for his sake that he’d find a big four or five-year deal on the strength of a strong year in 2015, but, since that didn’t happen, I’m glad he’s back with the Cubs, who are much better for his return.

For example, last night, just after the game tightened up a bit at 4-1 (hey, that was about as close as either of the first two games felt at any moment after the first or second inning), Fowler got the 3-0 green light in the 7th inning with a man on base, and he hammered it:

How many leadoff hitters are getting the 3-0 green light in that situation, anyway? I doubt very many.

The hit was Fowler’s second of the night, and fifth of the two-game series. He also walked once, and has a .625/.667/1.125 line right now. Your hilariously small-sample WAR check has him at 0.3, which puts him at a 24.3 WAR pace for the year. I think he can do it.

More fun with Fowler’s homer, as I saw a pitcher reacting to what happened to an elevated 90-mph fastball:

And we weren’t the only ones having fun with Fowler’s big start to the season, as Fowler’s wife posted an incredibly adorable video of the couple’s daughter loving on daddy:
