Chicago Cubs

Another frustrating loss for the Cubs – only their third loss of the season, but, since it’s the second frustrating one in three days, it’s probably going to gnaw at folks much more than it should.

Jon Lester was fantastic today, and Adam Warren and Justin Grimm were solid in relief of him. Each of Lester and Grimm gave up a homer to Nolan Arenado to account for the two Rockies runs, but that’s kind of a tip-your-cap-he-does-that-a-lot kind of thing. The Cubs’ pitching was very good today.

But for the second time this series, Rockies pitching kept the Cubs off balance by pounding the zone and inducing – or at least getting – weak contact. Defensively, the Rockies were great again, and it translated to bupkis for the Cubs. No, you should still not extrapolate a single thing from this game. The Cubs’ offense is good – but they were never going to keep scoring seven runs per game.

Meanwhile, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that this kind of game happened to Jon Lester a lot last year …
