Enhanced Box Score: Braves 4, Cubs 3 – May 1, 2016

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs haven’t had too many occasions this year to even try to rally from down three runs late, but they pulled off the trick in the 8th and 9th innings in this one after the bats had otherwise been held down all day. Two perfectly-placed groundballs in the 10th off of Hector Rondon gave the Braves runners at the corners, and a sac fly later, they’d reclaimed the lead. It was one of those runs that you kinda just have to shake your head about.

Still, it was fun to see the Cubs climb back into a game in which they’d been largely silent. I know. It’s not enough to mollify you today, but these kinds of losses will happen.

John Lackey was very solid today, giving up not much in the way of hard contact, and would have allowed just one run if not for a defensive miscue at shortstop behind him. I won’t hate on Addison Russell, though, not only because he’s so good defensively that he gets a pass for an occasional gaffe, but also because his 9th inning single tied the game.

Ultimately, the Cubs couldn’t get anything done in the first seven innings, and that was probably the main story of the game, even as it got tight at the end.

And to that I say …
