Modern pitchers often get a pretty bad rap: They’re bad hitters, they’re lazy runners, they’re poor fielders, basically, they’re not the all-around baseball players of yester-year.
Of course that’s not necessarily true, though there are a few who are more athletic than the rest. Enter Danny Duffy of the Kansas City Royals with an impressively athletic play:
Play of the year? Come on now …
It’s not quite “the play of the year,” like the Royals announcer suggests, but it was still a very athletic, defensively-keen play. Despite finishing on the third base side of the mound, Duffy spins around, quickly cuts off the ball and makes a perfect glove flip to first base, sprawling out in the process, to beat the runner. Excellent defense, excellent play.
Yes, Duffy must be one-a them athletes.
