Cubs Minor League Daily: Updates on Zastryzny, Nathan

As expected, when information on the status of Rob Zastryzny, the Iowa starter who left his Thursday night start with an apparent injury, came available, it was Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register who gave us the news. And the news is good.

Apparently the problem was likely just fatigue. Looking at the numbers, that isn’t all that surprising. Between Tennessee and Iowa, Zastryzny has already tossed 113.2 innings this year. That isn’t a lot for a starter, but it is a large increase over his 2015 total of 90.2 (including the Arizona Fall League). His inning count is already about 25% higher than last year’s figure, and there is a lot of baseball left to be played. He’s on pace for 150 total innings or so, and that would be about as large an increase over last year’s totals as we are likely to see the Cubs allow in a single minor league season.

In other words, I would not be surprised to see Zastryzny held to a tighter pitch limit or moved to the bullpen at some point this year. He has back of the rotation potential and could be an option as soon as next season; the Cubs will not want to risk an injury by pitching him into arm exhaustion.[adinserter block=”1″]

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

  • Jose Rosario: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 K

  • Tim Federowicz: 2 for 4
  • Munenori Kawasaki: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Montgomery 12, Tennessee 0
They were blown out, shut out, and committed five errors. This might be as bad as it gets for the Smokies.

  • Juan Paniagua: 3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 6 K

  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Frederick 8, Myrtle Beach 7 in eleven innings.
The Pelicans allowed runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth as they let this one slip away.

  • Erick Leal: 5 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 6 H, 1 BB, 3 K

  • Low A: South Bend Cubs

The Cubs struck out sixteen times and only managed one extra base hit. That usually leads to a loss.

  • Tanner Griggs: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Bryant Flete: 1 for 3, 3B

The Royals mounted a ninth inning come back that finished a run short.

  • Erling Moreno: 6 IP, 4 H, 6 K
  • Andry Rondon: 2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Luis Ayala: 0 for 3, 2 BB, SB

  • Isaac Paredes: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Reuben Reyes: 2 for 4, 2B[adinserter block=”3″]
  • Other Notes

  • Add it all up, and three Eugene relievers combined to pitch five innings of no hit baseball, walking none and striking out a combined eight in the process.
  • [Brett: Eloy Jimenez left South Bend’s game halfway through, after singling and running the bases. No reason has been given, and there might not be any notable reason; but, given that he’s a top prospect, and it’s mid-July, people notice these things. Hopefully he’s back in the lineup today, and it’s not an injury situation.]
  • The valuable Mr. Birch also brought us an update on the plan for veteran reliever Joe Nathan. It sounds like he should be packing his bags for Chicago any day now.
