Marlins and Padres Reportedly Getting Together on Big Deal Involving Cashner, Rea, Naylor (UPDATE)
The Padres’ selloff continues (as it should have last year at this time, but whatever), with Buster Olney reporting starter Andrew Cashner is on his way out:
Sources: The Marlins, who have been looking for rotation depth, have an agreement in place to acquire Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner.

Per source, Marlins also getting pitcher Colin Rea from Padres. So Miami getting two starting pitchers from SD, Cashner and Rea

Cashner, whom the Padres originally acquired from the Cubs for Anthony Rizzo before the 2012 season, is a pure rental, and a good one when he’s on. Rea would be a longer-term addition for the Marlins. He hasn’t really put it together in the big leagues, but the Marlins need arms, apparently.
Josh Naylor was the Marlins’ first round pick last year, so they’re paying a healthy price to pick up these two arms.
At 55-47, the Marlins are just 5.0 games behind the Nationals in the NL East, and are tied with the Cardinals (whom they’re playing this weekend) for the second Wild Card spot. Any moves made this trade season that impact the playoff races are going to be of note to the Cubs, who themselves project to be a playoff team, either by virtue of winning the NL Central (6.5 game lead) or a Wild Card spot (let’s hope not, but, well, at a minimum).
The Marlins play the Cubs in their next series, which would have the Cubs missing Cashner, if he stays on regular rest. But, with two new arms coming, I won’t even try to project the rotation that far out. The only thing I can tell for sure? The Cubs won’t miss Jose Fernandez, unless the Marlins decided to give him two extra days of rest.
UPDATE: The other pieces going in the deal:
The #Marlins will also send RHP Jarred Cosart to the #Padres in the Andrew Cashner/Colin Rea deal, sources said. https://t.co/9Zg41PR6rM

That is an enormous trade, in volume and intrigue, if nothing else.
