Cubs Minor League Daily: Eloy Jimenez is the Prospect of the Year, Plus More Awards

major award leg lamp trophyI’m not sure we’ve seen a player wrack up the minor league honors like this since a guy named Kris Bryant rampaged through the organization a few years back. Eloy Jimenez, the 19-year-old South Bend outfielder (and the best prospect in the system), picked up three more awards yesterday. He is now a Midwest League Post-Season All Star, the league Most Valuable Player, and the league Prospect of the Year.

And that’s not all.

Former South Bend and now Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Preston Morrison was also named to the Midwest League Post-Season All Star team. He has quietly had an excellent season, posting a 2.23 ERA between the two levels in his first full season as a professional.

But wait, there’s more!

South Bend manager Jimmy Gonzalez was named the Manager of the Year in the Midwest League. And over in the Carolina League, the Pelicans’ Toby Williams was named Trainer of the Year.

That’s a lot of hardware for one organization in one day, and half of it went to Jimenez. I am really looking forward to seeing what he can do in the higher levels of the minors.[adinserter block=”1″]

  • Other Notes

  • On September 8 the South Bend Cubs will host a playoff game against the West Michigan Whitecaps, and in attendance will be Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts. Ricketts will also be throwing out the first pitch. It remains to be seen if he will then do his usual routine of talking with fans in the stands, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he does. If you want to meet the Chairman, and see a good team in the playoffs, then a September 8 trip to South Bend might be in order.
  • How about this catch:

  • If you believe Twitter (and you really shouldn’t), then we might be underestimating Pelicans’ trainer Toby Williams just a bit. If you believe Twitter:
  • And that Eloy Jimenez homer:
