Cubs Minor League Daily: Can’t Win Them all

south bend cubs logoThere were two games completed in the farm system yesterday, and both of them went into extra innings. Unfortunately, both ended the same way – a Cubs’ affiliate lost at home.

For South Bend, that loss marks the end of a very successful season. This is the game that was started on Friday, suspended due to rain, and resumed yesterday afternoon. It was Game Three of a best of three series, so the Cubs will now head home for the winter.

Myrtle Beach still has life, but defending their Carolina League Championship just got tougher. The Pelicans are at home for the first two games of this best of five, but by losing the first contest, Myrtle Beach will now have to win twice on the road to take home the title. That is very doable, but certainly more challenging than needing to win just one.

Eugene was off yesterday. They open the Northwest League Championship Series tonight.[adinserter block=”1″][adinserter block=”10″]

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Lynchburg 4, Myrtle Beach 3 in twelve innings.
Baseball doesn’t get much better than extra innings in a championship series.

  • Erick Leal: 5 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Daury Torrez: 3 IP, 4 K
  • Scott Effross: 3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 K
  • Donnie Dewees: 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB
  • David Bote: 4 for 5, 2B, BB
  • Jeffrey Baez: 2 for 5, BB
  • Andrew Ely: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Be sure to watch highlights video below. Jeffrey Baez makes a very nice catch, and then shows off a pretty good arm to double a runner off at first.

Best of Five Championship Series: Myrtle Beach trails 0 – 1
Next Game: Tonight in Myrtle Beach at 6:05 PM ET.
Matchup: Brock Hartson (Lynchburg) against TBD

Harston is a 2015 signee who spent much of the year in Low A, moving to the Carolina League just long enough to make six starts. In High A his ERA is a little high at 4.18, but it was a much healthier 2.86 in the lower tier. He is prone to the long ball, but did not give up any when he shut down the Pelicans by holding them to three hits over six innings on August 30.

    Low A: South Bend Cubs
West Michigan 4, South Bend 3 in ten innings.
This will be the final entry for South Bend in the 2016 Daily.

  • Adbert Alzolay: 5 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • John Williamson: 1.2 IP, 1 H
  • Pedro Araujo: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Vimael Machin: 2 for 3, 3B, BB
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Connor Myers: 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, SB
  • Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds

Best of Three Championship Series: Tied at 0 – 0
Next Game: Tonight at 6:05 PM ET in Everett.
Matchup: Danny Garcia (Everett) against TBD

Garcia is a 22-year-old lefty who appeared in twelve games (six starts) for Everett. He isn’t much of a strikeout pitcher with just 23 whiffs in 42.2 innings, but his ERA of 3.59 indicates a guy who has had a fair amount of success. He last faced Eugene in Eugene on August 21 and held the Emeralds hitless over 3.1 innings. On July 8, though, Eugene chased him after 2.1 innings when he gave up 5 runs on 6 hits.
