Cubs Minor League Daily: Decisive Game Three in Eugene

eugene emeralds logoThe advantage of winning Game One of the Northwest League Championship Series on the road is that Eugene would get two shots to win the title at home. Their first shot did not go well yesterday. That means it all comes down to the game tonight. The winner of this game is the champion.

Myrtle Beach is also back in action tonight, on the the road with their series tied up at one game apiece.

High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Best of Five Championship Series: Tied at 1-1.
Next Game: Tonight at 6:30 PM ET in Lynchburg.
Matchup: Trevor Clifton against TBD.

This is Clifton’s second start of the postseason; he allowed a run on five hits over six innings against Salem in the previous series. This right hander has turned in an excellent season already, and I don’t doubt that we’ll see another strong performance that is high on strikeouts and low on hard contact.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Everett 7, Eugene 1
Eugene never led in this one.

  • Tyson Miller: 3.1 IP, 4 R (2 ER), 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Bryan Hudson: 4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 2 K
  • Wladimir Galindo: 3 for 4, 2B. This was his first really good offensive game of the postseason.
  • Zack Short: 2 for 3, BB
  • Best of Three Championship Series: Tied at 1-1.
Next Game: Tonight at 10:05 PM ET in Eugene.
Matchup: Neither pitcher has been announced.

    Other Notes

  • It is questionable to what degree minor league organizational records correlate with anything, but that is also an area in which we have not really tracked the numbers very closely. I suspect Triple-A wins are just about meaningless from an organizational health standpoint as the really good Triple-A teams tend to have a lot of minor league veterans on them, but that wins in the lower levels might just track with talent. I haven’t proved it, though. Regardless, I do like to see that the Cubs finished sixth in all baseball in organizational winning percentage, tied for third in number of teams sent to the postseason, and will finish at the very worst with two league runners up (and quite possibly with two league champions). That is a great year for any farm system.

  • More good news on the minor league front: over 41 million fans visited a minor league game this season. That’s good for the ninth best attendance of all time. I don’t have demographic data on those 41 million, but based on the anecdotal evidence of the games I have attended, that crowd runs significantly younger than the demographics of the standard major league crowd. To me, that means baseball should have a very bright future. They just need to find a way to convert kids at the minor league games into fans at the major league level.
  • The Cubs did finish with four Baseball America developmental level All Stars this season, but a close look at the list shows that the Cubs, for most of the year, had six. Dan Vogelbach and Gleyber Torres, both traded in July, each got on the list for Triple A and High A respectively.
