So close.
The World Champion Chicago Cubs were so close to making it through the executive turnover portion of the offseason without incurring a significant blow to the front office – a loaded front office – that got them that championship. It almost seemed … unfair. The excellent kind of unfair.
But, alas:
#Dbacks name Jared Porter as SVP & Asst. GM, promote Mike Bell to VP, Player Development and name Josh Barfield as Asst. Dir., Pro Scouting.

Porter, who joined the Cubs in August 2015 from the Red Sox to replace then-outing Director of Pro Scouting Joe Bohringer, is a very well-regarded, up-and-coming executive. You may recall that his name popped up more than once during the Twins’ front office search, and with Arizona importing a new front office from Boston, it only makes sense that they’d reach out to try to bring someone like Porter into the mix.
We’ll see soon enough if the Cubs already have a replacement lined up, or if there will be a search process. Though less often discussed, the Director of Pro Scouting is a tremendously important role within an effective front office.
Best of luck to Porter in his new role, and best of luck to the Cubs as they look to reload in the front office.
