Spring Training Miscellany: Cubs 9, Rockies 6 – Davis Dominant, Hendricks Defies Math, Rizzo Righty, More

The Cubs carried a 3-2 lead into the 8th inning today against the Rockies, when they busted out for another six runs. Good thing they did, because the Rockies countered with another four of their own in the bottom of the frame.

If my math checks out, that means the Cubs won the game. SPRING TRAINING RESULTS ARE EVERYTHING!

The Cubs got offensive contributions from up and down the lineup, with all of Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora, Matt Szczur, and Ian Happ driving in runs. Jeimer Candelario had a couple hits, including a double.

Szczur, in particular, had a huge day, with three knocks, including his first spring homer. His Spring Training OPS now stands at 1.069.

Kyle Hendricks allowed a couple runs in this one, which is unusual for him – even this spring – but he struck out another four batters without allowing a walk, pushing him up to a 14/0 K/BB ratio this spring. I dare you to do the math on that. I DARE YOU!

For the first time this spring, Wade Davis had a Wade Davis-like inning with a couple strikeouts and no damage done. Not that you should have been worried before today or sated by today, but I’m sure he was happy about it, if nothing else.

Like Davis, Koji Uehara pitched a clean inning with a couple strikeouts. If he stays healthy this year, he could be a wonderful, steady presence in those late-innings, no matter what other performances are fluctuating around him.

If you missed it, Eloy Jimenez has been shut down for three weeks.

Kyle Schwarber was behind the pitcher, so to speak, in this one, but that doesn’t figure to be the batting order when the season starts.
