It wasn’t the very first play of the game, but it was close. It was the third.
Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell has been out of Spring Training action for more than a week with a tight back, and finally returned to the lineup tonight in an exhibition against the Astros.

Russell actually did get the first ball in play of the night by the Astros, a routine grounder which he fielded without issue. Much more interesting is what he did with the third ball in play – a rocket by Jose Altuve:
Yes, I’d say Russell is feeling pretty good. And looking good, too.
The next half inning, naturally, Russell drove in the first run of the game by lashing a single to right center:

Then, the very next inning, the young man who was having a blistering spring before his back issue popped up, ripped a homer to left:
