Cubs Minor League Daily: No First Place Teams, Bonus Trouble with a Beach Ball

Iowa (9-8) is playing in a tough division. Despite being back over .500, they remain in third place. The gap between the Cubs and the first place Sky Sox has shrunk, though, and Iowa now lurks just two games back of Colorado Springs. And guess who comes into Iowa starting Thursday? That’s right – Colorado Springs. But first the Cubs have to wrap up a road series in Round Rock.

The Double A Smokies are just over .500 at 8-7, and are tied for third. Jackson is in first place with a game and a half lead on Tennessee. The Smokies could take sole possession of third place soon; they are tied with Chattanooga, and are currently playing in Chattanooga. Following that series they stay on the road in Mississippi.

The Pelicans (8-9), meanwhile, are tied for second with Down East and trail Buies Creek by a full four games. Myrtle Beach can break that tie with their game in Down East today, but catching the first place Astros affiliate will take a little longer. Work on that task continues at home against Wilmington mid-week, and then in Lynchburg for the weekend.

South Bend (9-7) entered yesterday tied for first, but after their loss to Dayton they are sitting in second just one game behind. They get one more crack at Dayton today, and then it is off to Lansing for three followed by Fort Wayne for four.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 8, Round Rock 3
Just like their cohorts in Chicago, the Iowa offense is starting to produce a lot of runs.

  • Jake Buchanan: 3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Zach Rosscup: 2 IP, 2 H, 4 K
  • Miguel Mejia: 2.1 IP, 2 BB, 1 K
  • Pierce Johnson: 1.2 IP, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Tommy LaStella: 2 for 4, BB
  • Ian Happ: 2 for 3, 2 BB
  • Victor Caratini: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Mark Zagunis: 1 for 3, HR, BB
  • Bijan Rademacher: 2 for 3, HR, BB
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies

    The Smokies were rained out.

    High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Down East 8, Myrtle Beach 2
The Pelicans could not build on a pretty good performance from Hatch.

  • Thomas Hatch: 4 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K
  • Trent Giambrone: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Adonis Paula: 2 for 3, 2B
  • [adinserter block=”2″]

    Low A: South Bend Cubs
    Dayton 7, South Bend 2
The Cubs fell behind in the first and never closed that initial gap.

  • Tyson Miller: 4.2 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 4 BB, 3 K
  • Dakota Mekkes: 2 IP, 2 K
  • Michael Rucker: 1 IP, 3 K
  • Zack Short: 0 for 2, 2 BB
  • D.J. Wilson: 2 for 4, 2 SB
  • Other Notes

  • The homer by Zagunis was a grand slam.
  • With LaStella now in Iowa, it looks like he will be floating around the infield a bit. Last night he was playing third as Jeimer Candelario got a day off. On other days I suspect he will be at second with Happ getting some time in the outfield.
  • Speaking of Happ, as promised here is the footage of his seventh homer. This one he drilled from the right side.
  • Your browser does not support iframes.

  • And a little bonus fun from South Bend, where outfielder D.J. Wilson had some trouble with a beach ball:
