Chicago Cubs

Even in a game where the Cubs trailed early, and even in a game where they stranded so many baserunners and missed so many opportunities, the Cubs were still right in this game up until the end. Even in the 9th inning, the Cubs got the tying run to second base, only to see the game end on a double play grounder. Which, well, seemed fitting.

Jon Lester was far from his best for the second straight start. No, he didn’t get a lot of help from his defense, but he also got hit reasonably hard and consistently. He will have better days.

Ditto for Kyle Schwarber, who struggled at the plate and in left field. I’d say he’s due for a day off, but the whole team gets one tomorrow.

Part of me has a tough time getting too grousy about the way the Cubs lost this one, because I just can’t shake the notion that winning last night’s game was such a gift. You don’t expect the karmic balance to align quite that quickly, but here we are.
