God’s Wrath Watch: Hendricks, Zobrist, Arrieta, Russell, Heyward

The Cubs are suddenly dealing with a panoply of injury issues, so a wholesale update seemed appropriate this morning, as we re-set things for the week …

  • We mentioned it briefly yesterday in the Bullets, but the update on Kyle Hendricks is technically a non-update. The Cubs and Hendricks are simply waiting for the pain in his hand (tendinitis) to go away before he can start throwing again. Whenever that happens, Joe Maddon anticipates Hendricks will need a rehab assignment to get going again (Sun-Times), so, even at the most generous, we’re not going to see Hendricks back in the big league rotation for 10 or more days. That’ll mean another couple starts, at a minimum, for Mike Montgomery. And if things get much longer than that, the Cubs may wind up waiting until after the All-Star break to bring Hendricks back. Quite a significant stretch of missed starts for an issue that initially only barely put Hendricks on the disabled list at all. At least his arm is getting some rest.
  • Jason Heyward scraped up his hand quite badly on a sliding catch yesterday, ultimately departing the game. Joe Maddon says he’s not sure if Heyward will be able to go today (ESPN), which would be understandable based on some pictures Heyward posted to Instagram after the game. Even taped up, given where the abrasion is located, I’d think it difficult to grip the bat and maybe even to make throws. We’ll find out more today, but he might miss time with this one, unfortunately.
  • Addison Russell sat out yesterday’s game after turning his ankle the day before, though the injury is not considered serious (Cubs.com). Since returning from his time off surrounding the domestic violence allegations earlier this month, Russell has hit .304/.333/.783 with three home runs. As for his throwing issues, he says there’s no physical issue there (Tribune).
  • Jake Arrieta did not feel the effects of his longstanding thumb cut/blister issue in his latest start, despite having to depart in the fifth inning when he lost command (Tribune). It was sweat this time, and not the thumb issue. So that’s … good news? Arrieta does concede to Ken Rosenthal, however, that the combined toll of nearly 500 innings between 2015 and 2016 has had some effect on him this year.
  • Ben Zobrist (wrist) will visit with a hand specialist today for more testing (Tribune). Zobrist initially experienced discomfort back in May when the Cubs were in Los Angeles, and although he played through the injury (swinging mostly only from the left side), things never got better. The Cubs ultimately put him on the disabled list last week. He’s eligible to return as soon as Friday, but it’s still not clear when he’ll actually be back and 100%.
