Cubs Minor League Daily: Top Cubs Draft Pick Brendon Little Debuts

The Cubs’ first overall pick in the 2017 draft made his professional debut for the Eugene Emeralds yesterday. It wasn’t a great opening effort for the left hander by the results, and it unfortunately came on the road so we don’t have any video of the game. Still, it is good to see that he is in action.

As expected, the Cubs appear to be limiting his pitch count. College pitchers tend to work a lot of innings before the draft rolls around, and the Cubs do not want to overload his left arm right away. That means Little was lifted after throwing just 35 pitches yesterday, and I think we can expect him to remain on some sort of a pitch count going forward.

In terms of results, Little only walked one and struck out only one, but he did register four groundouts to just one fly out. He allowed runs in his first two innings, but finished his night with a scoreless third.

It is possible that the Cubs will move Little up to South Bend later this summer, but I would not be surprised if he stays put. Regardless, if his mechanics look good to the Cubs in the spring, he could be a candidate to jump up to Myrtle Beach for the start of his first full professional season.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 2, El Paso 1
The Cubs came out ahead in the rare Pacific Coast League pitchers’ duel.

  • Rob Zastryzny: 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 6 K
  • Felix Pena: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 K
  • Jack Leathersich: 0.2 IP, 1 K
  • Matt Carasiti: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Mark Zagunis: 1 for 4, HR
  • Jeimer Candelario: 1 for 2, 2 BB
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Montgomery 4, Tennessee 3
Despite the final score, Underwood didn’t have a bad game.

  • Duane Underwood: 6 IP, 4 R (0 ER), 7 H, 6 K
  • Daury Torrez: 2 IP, 2 K
  • Trey Martin: 2 for 4, BB
  • Jason Vosler: 3 for 5
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 3 for 4
  • David Bote: 2 for 5
  • Erick Castillo: 2 for 4
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach 1
Until the late innings, this was also a pitchers’ duel.

  • Kyle Miller: 4 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 4 BB, 6 K
  • Scott Effross: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Zack Short: 3 for 4
  • Vimael Machin: 2 for 2
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs

The Cubs had the day off.

    Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Eugene 7, Salem-Keizer 6
    Eugene won in Little’s debut.

  • Brendon Little: 3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Luis Aquino: 2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K
  • Miguel Amaya: 1 for 5, 2B
  • Michael Cruz: 3 for 4, 2 HR
  • Zach Davis: 2 for 4
  • Rookie: AZL Cubs
    Giants 6, Cubs 2
The Cubs were out hit sixteen to six.

  • Yunior Perez: 3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 K
  • Chris Singleton: 2 for 4, HR
  • Rafael Mejia: 1 for 4, SB
  • Luis Vazquez: 2 for 3
  • Other Notes

  • All four pitchers who played for Iowa yesterday could be in (or back in) Chicago by the end of the season. Zastryzny coming back from his rehab assignment with a strong start is a very good sign; he will certainly be up in September if not before. Leathersich hasn’t had a great year, but has pretty good stuff from the left side. And Carasiti might just be the best reliever in the Pacific Coast League right now. If the Cubs want another middle innings arm for the stretch run, they could do a lot worse than giving Carasiti a shot.
  • Three errors for the Smokies turned into all of Montgomery’s runs. Underwood wound up needing 99 pitches to get through six pretty good innings that included nine ground outs.
