The 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series title was the culmination of a process that started years earlier, with contributions from people who’d long since departed the organization. And, arguably, without whom, the championship never happens.
I very much dig the way the Cubs handled their historic win in that context, by providing World Series rings not only to people throughout the organization, but also people who worked so hard to help put the Cubs in a position for 2016 to happen.
To that end, it turns out that the Cubs gave World Series rings to former managers Rick Renteria and Dale Sveum, and former GM Jim Hendry (CBS). Without the managers who led the Cubs through the rebuilding process, perhaps the young talent doesn’t develop and emerge as it does. And Hendry, even as he did make mistakes, had his fingerprints all over that championship team.
It takes a village, the old saying goes, to end a 108-year title drought. The Cubs very classily honored the entire village for its contributions. They even honored Steve Bartman with a ring as a way of turning the page.
And, with all of that in mind, I think helping to keep fans entertained, engaged, and informed during the rebuilding process was *CRITICAL* in the ultimate success of the 2016 club, so I will thus humbly accept my championship ring at a future date and time. I’m a size Bling.
