Remember when the 8th inning was a bad thing?
That certainly wasn’t the case yesterday, as the Cubs not only came back on the Braves in the 8th inning, they came back so hard that it also wound up being a round of screw the closer. By the time Brandon Morrow entered to finish things out in the 9th, it wasn’t even a save situation.
That’s because the Cubs, who’d already scored a few runs in the middle innings to shrink the Braves’ early lead from 10-2 to 10-5, put together a NINE-RUN 8th inning. And maybe most incredibly, they didn’t start scoring until there were already two outs (@Cubs):

That went from steady chipping away to just pure madness. Here’s how the inning went:
All of that, after being down 10-2 in the 6th inning. The few fans who stayed for that one deserve a freaking medal. Not only was the game a blowout and totally over, the weather was among the worst I’ve ever seen at a baseball game: wind chills taking the temperature below freezing, constant rain and mist, and blustering wind in your face.
And, of course, the Cubs’ players deserve a ton of credit for staying in this insane game.
