Anthony Rizzo (back) has not yet officially been activated from the disabled list, but it’s coming later today, in the first day he’s eligible to return.
We can tell that because first baseman Efren Navarro, who was called up when Rizzo went on the DL, has been optioned to AAA Iowa, per the Cubs’ transactions page. Although it’s technically possible that the Cubs could call someone else up to replace Navarro, there has been no indication that anything other than the return of Rizzo is on tap.
Navarro, 31, had four strikeouts and one hit in his six plate appearances. Absent another injury to Rizzo, he is unlikely to return to the big league team until rosters expand in September, if then.
