The Cardinals continue to overhaul their bullpen, having already dumped Greg Holland, Tyler Lyons, and Sam Tuivailala, and then called up pitching prospect Dakota Hudson. Now they picked up another couple relievers from the Yankees.
In the deal, the Cardinals got lefty Chasen Shreve and right Giovanny Gallegos in exchange for first baseman Luke Voit and $1 million in IFA bonus pool space (which the Yankees are apparently going to be using on a top Cuban pitching prospect).
Voit, 27, has shown a strong bat in the upper minors, but has never translated it in the big leagues. And, if the Cardinals weren’t going to use that pool space, then they picked up the relievers for just about nothing.
Shreve, 28, is one of those good-not-great relievers, who has posted huge strikeout totals but also huge walk totals. He’s also always been very prone to the long ball. Still, probably an upgrade to the Cardinals’ bullpen.
Gallegos, 26, doesn’t have much big league experience, having mostly been a dominating reliever at AAA the last few years, unable to really break through with the Yankees for a long stretch.
