Weather Might Kick the Cubs’ Butt Again Today Instead of Bryce Harper and Other Bullets

For logistical reasons related to supervision from a distance, I had to shower in the kids’ shower this morning. So I smell like bubblegum and passion fruit. It’s … actually not terrible.

Obviously weather can change and forecasts aren’t perfect, but:

When you’ve got a system just hanging out in an area, you can be pretty confident about what it’s going to do (rain, a lot). So it’s a very good bet that there’s a long delay again today. You know, after a late doubleheader. You know, before the Cubs have to travel tonight. You know, to play their most important series of the year. HOORAY!

(And don’t even let me go down the road of thinking about what happens if today’s game gets rained out and MLB decides to reschedule it for the common off-day this Thursday … the Cubs’ first off-day in 24 days.)

Losing the first game yesterday is easy enough for me to throw away and chalk up to circumstances. That second game, though, I’m still stewing. It’s unfortunate that Hamels was not nearly as sharp as he has been in his previous starts with the Cubs, but (1) he was still pretty good against a potent lineup, and (2) you can’t expect a guy to be as freakishly good every time out as he has been. So, I suppose I’m bothered the Cubs couldn’t tack on more runs and that two bullpen stalwarts – Steve Cishek and Justin Wilson – couldn’t help pull out the close win. It happens; it just sucks that both guys gave it up in the same game, and it happened in the night game after a punted day game.

The decisive blow came from, who else, Bryce Harper … how could you, man:

Justin Wilson missed his spot, and he knew it was very bad immediately. Just make sure to sign Harper this offseason so that it doesn’t happen again …

I will offer one bit of positive: *if* this game gets played today and *IF* the Cubs manage to win, then a 2-2 series split in DC is really not the worst outcome in the world for this particular series. Heck, I would have taken a 2-2 split coming in.

Everyone is a big Madison Bumgarner fan today, right? That’s who the Brewers will be facing as they try to sweep the Giants.

If you were wondering whether Drew Smyly would be joining the big league team down the stretch, sounds like it’s a no:

No updates on Smyly. Pretty much ensures he won't be a factor at all in 2018.

So no "secret weapon" joining Cubs bullpen. Only the not-so-secret Brandon Morrow, whose status is still very much in question and his Sunday bullpen may also be affected by the weather.
