The Cubs’ lead in the Central is down to a single run after a relatively mundane loss.
In any one-run game, you can invariably point to a play here or there that “decided” things, and that’s certainly the case tonight. But the one that most will point to in a singular fashion is the first-pitch, wild pitch from Carl Edwards Jr. when he was called upon to get out of a jam in the 6th inning after Jon Lester departed with back tightness. That gave the Brewers the leading – and ultimately winning – run. It was the last thing you wanted to see from a guy who is clearly fighting through a serious loss of command at a time when the Cubs desperately need him to be effective.
Although the Cubs made him work, they ultimately couldn’t solve Wade Miley once again. Weak grounders all over the place. And once Miley left, it was Josh Hader with *SIX STRAIGHT* strikeouts over his two innings of work. Jeremy Jeffress finished things off in the 9th.
Hopefully Lester is not seriously injured, or else this loss goes from bad to disaster.
