Just after the game ended, Brett asked me to do the EBS.

I’m guessing I wouldn’t have gotten the honor had the Cubs won. 😉
Miles Mikolas was genuinely very good today – so was Cole Hamels. The Cubs hit the ball very hard all day, but everything died on the warning track thanks to the wind blowing in. On another day, in another life, the Cubs probably have at least two homers and many more runs. But today is not another day. It’s today. And the Cubs dropped a brutally painful 2-1 loss to the Cardinals at the worst possible time.
And that’s all I got for you on game stuff – at least, for now. Perhaps we’ll find time to dig in more deeply later on, but I just can’t bring myself to do it at the moment. That was a very big game to lose, and now the Cubs are at risk of losing sole possession of first place in the NL Central tonight, if the Tigers can’t find a way to beat the Brewers (who are now only a .5 game back).
I can’t tell you how excited I was to have a stress free evening, during which the Cubs could’ve potentially clinched, but it’s just not gonna happen anymore. Regardless of what happens tonight, it’ll come down to Mike Montgomery and game 162 tomorrow. And they’ll still need the Brewers to lose. It is no longer only in the Cubs hands.
Go Tigers.
