My Lighter Fluid Oopsy, Rizzo’s D, Russell Rumor, Prospect Travels, and Other Bullets

I did something very dumb this weekend while grilling. Since I don’t really grill, I don’t know best practices, but even I know you gotta be careful when using lighter fluid.

But I nevertheless was an idiot, doused the coals like a dog marking his territory. I did this after they’d once been lit but had died, which I know, I know, is also risky. That part wound up OK. But because I’d sprayed after the grate on top was hot, instead of just removing it with a glove or something like a normal thinking adult, I decided in the moment that the only way to light the coals was to put the lighter down in through the slats. As soon as my dumbass clicked the lighter, the whole top of the grill ignited, which at that time included my arm and the lighter. Thankfully, nothing happened – I yanked my arm out, nothing caught on fire because it was so quick, the lighter didn’t explode, I didn’t even feel anything, etc. But boy was that stupid. And since nothing “bad” happened, I feel like the only way I can learn my lesson is by publicly shaming myself.

Also: The Wife didn’t know any of this until perhaps right now as she reads this. Sorry, dear. But the hot dogs and s’mores were great, right?

  • Some love for two-time Gold Glover Anthony Rizzo:
  • Because he won the Gold Glove, Rizzo is also now eligible to win the Platinum Glove as the best defender in baseball:

  • The big rumor last night had the Cubs considering bringing Addison Russell back next year, even after his suspension under the domestic violence policy. I still tend to think that’s a bit of intentional public messaging to let the baseball world know the Cubs “have options,” but for what it’s worth, Gordon Wittenmyer echoed Patrick Mooney’s report around the same time, writing, “Indications are the Cubs might consider keeping Russell (who must sit out the first 28 games of the season) depending on their evaluation after his mandated counseling and their own background work on the situation.” The tender deadline for arbitration-eligible players is at the end of this month, and if the Cubs haven’t traded Russell by then, things will be very uncomfortable and potentially ugly.
  • Aside: lotta stuff seems to be coming out of the front office in the form of very direct rumors this week, eh? That’s not at all typical for this front office in their time with the Cubs, which is curious. I don’t want to leap to any obvious conclusions (they are doing so much intentional misdirection!), but I do think it’s fair to say there are some folks who pretty clearly want certain messages out for reasons about which we could thoughtfully speculate.
  • Does it make me a bad person if I say the Cardinals one is the best looking:
  • This is awesome for so many reasons:
  • It was a busy weekend, so make sure to scan the headlines here to catch yourself up if you weren’t around.
  • A bunch of grocery goods are the Deal of the Day at Amazon today, so you really want to check this out in case you want to stock up.
  • Good, good stuff from the Bears world, as they smoked the Bills yesterday even with a limited roster (and note the celebrations they do, even on the road, as an idea they got from the Cubs):
