It Had to Be Done: Edwards to Iowa, Montgomery to Injured List (Update: Webster and Ryan Coming Up?)
As we discussed this morning, Carl Edwards Jr.’s struggles go back far beyond this season, but the extent to which he looked completely out of whack reached a new level this past week. He needed to head out to Iowa to work on his issues, and also to help give the bullpen a chance to turn things around.
And so it is, with Mike Montgomery also heading to the Injured List:
If you missed my radio report this morning I said Edwards to Iowa, Montgomery to IL. (Injured list)

The corresponding moves are not yet clear, nor is the extent of Montgomery’s injury (he had been getting absolutely lit up). The Cubs have a number of interesting options at AAA Iowa, though, so there’s really a large group from which they could draw for replacements at this point.
More details when we have them.
Update (Michael): This doesn’t feel like a concrete report just yet, but both Allen Webster and Kyle Ryan are among the obvious replacement candidates:
Look for Allen Webster or Kyle Ryan —or both—in Cubs pen for Brewers game tonight.
