Fun with Kris Bryant’s Big Day and Other Bullets

Like I mentioned in the EBS, I got hit by a car last night. It’s a wild thing to say, but it happened. I’m totally fine, though. I was walking home after watching the Cubs game at a bar in Wrigleyville when a ride-share car blew through the crosswalk I was rightly using. I was really lucky to see the car and react as quickly as I did – I put my arm down on the hood while moving away from the car, and hopped up to land on the hood on my butt. I was kinda in shock when I got down and started back-pedal away from the car. The driver asked if I was OK, and was just apologizing profusely, saying he’d been out too long that day and he was gonna go right home. Yikes. I guess he’s lucky that didn’t go a lot worse. Me, too.

  • Kris Bryant singled early in the game last night, but didn’t go OFF until the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, when he homered in each one. That made him just the second player ever to do that (JD Martinez), and just the 12th player ever to homer in any three straight innings (Cubs.com). This was the second time in Bryant’s career that he homered three times in a game, having done it once before in 2016.
  • On the strength of his big game, Bryant raised his slash line from .262/.397/.517 with a 145 wRC+ to .277/.405/.581 with a 161 wRC+, by far the best mark of his career. It’s also the fifth highest wRC+ right now in the NL, behind only Cody Bellinger, Christian Yelich, Willson Contreras, and Josh Bell.
  • Oh, and Bryant’s on-base streak is now up to a career and current-league-best 26.

  • Speaking of Contreras, although he didn’t quite have a Kris Bryant night, he had himself a big game, too, with a walk and four hits, including a home run:
  • This was just a killer at bat from a guy who sure seems like he’s seeing the ball much, much better right now:
