Craig Kimbrel was officially inked yesterday and has been added to the 40-man roster. Allen Webster was moved to the 60-day Injured List to make room.
As for the financial particulars of Kimbrel’s three-year deal, it is expectedly backloaded as the Cubs’ financial situation changes a good bit after this year:
2019: $10 million
2020: $16 million
2021: $16 million
2022: $16 million club/vesting option, or $1 million buyout
The total deal, then, is three years and $43 million, with escalators that can take that buyout up to $3 million, so the three-year deal could wind up worth $45 million. For luxury tax purposes, which treats the option year as part of the deal, the contract has a $14.5 million average annual value.
Some more details on the deal from Jon Heyman:
Kimbrel gets full no trade in 2019, Limited no trade in 2020 (8 teams on no trade list); no provision in 2021. #Cubs
