I hope we get the full story. I have feelings, and they are discontented feelings. (HOLY UPDATE BELOW!)
At one point Cubs and Detroit were close to dealing Nick Castellanos for minor league catcher Jhonny Pereda .

With one minute remaining before the trade deadline, Nick Castellanos has entered the Tigers dugout in uniform, where his name remains on the lineup card posted on the dugout wall.

If a deal fell through solely because the Cubs couldn’t make the money work – which we all knew was possible – it will be very disappointing. To be sure, there’s no way the Cubs would have balked at the prospect. Pereda is a legit catching prospect, but not a guy who’d hold this up. Either the Tigers backed out, there was a medical issue, or money was an issue.
We’ll see soon enough.
UPDATE: PLOT TWIST FOR HUGS?!?!?
Nick Castellanos is no longer in the Tigers dugout and Jordy Mercer has stepped on-deck, where Castellanos was hitting.

UPDATE 2: OMFG PLOT TWIST BABY:
#Cubs get Nicholas Castellanos, source tells The Athletic.

UPDATE 3: The return includes to pretty darn good pitching prospects, so I suspect this involved some cash:
Paul Richan and Alex Lange go from the Cubs to Tigers for Castellanos.
