A long overdue addition to gameplay in the replay era, MLB umpires – specifically, the crew chiefs – will be mic’d up so that they can explain any replay decisions and/or rules explanations as necessary during games.
And my understanding is it will be the crew chiefs only who will be mic’d up.

It has become a really tedious exercise trying to figure out why a certain call was made during a game where an application of the rules is not necessarily widely understood or intuitive. To be sure, it doesn’t happen all that often, but when it does, it’s like, just give me a few words from the umpires and we can all take it from there.
Oh, and hey, if a hot mic catches any fun interactions, that’d be cool, too …
