The Cubs were owned by Jacob deGrom through three perfect innings tonight. He struck out every batter he faced except for Anthony Rizzo (who, to his credit, sent one to the wall). He looked perfectly deGrom-like. He even drove in a run, because he does that, too.
But then he left the mound after the third inning, down the tunnel, and never returning. Details forthcoming, but he left his last start a little early with some flexor tendinitis. He didn’t miss any time, though, and now it’s kinda looking like maybe he should have. I want the Cubs to win and all that, but I don’t want to see the game’s brightest pitching star hurt.
The Cubs now have a much better chance of coming back in this one, but the substitute pitcher, Sean Reid-Foley, has been quite good this year, and the Cubs are already down 3-0.
UPDATE: Official early word is right shoulder soreness, which is also rather scary. Did he hurt the shoulder pitching through the elbow issue? Wholly unrelated? Tons of precaution? I just don’t like it. The guy is having a season for the history books right now.
